Mumbai, Dec 24 (UNI) More than 20,000 hawkers from the city, predominantly from Kalbadevi and southern parts, will be holding a demonstration against the police on December 27.
Speaking at a press conference today, Azaad Hawkers Union President Daya Shankar Singh said, ''We will hold a protest march from Marine Lines to Churchgate against the action taken by the police on some of the protestors, who were protesting against the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.'' On December 17, the hawkers were protesting against the Corporation's action on them, when some officers from the L T Marg police station stopped the protestors and man-handled them.
''After taking some of the hawkers to the police station, the police officials started beating them with lathis and leather belts,'' Mr Singh alleged.
After the protest, the hawkers will hold demonstrations at Azaad Maidan and try to meet the Brihanmumbai Municiapal Commissioner and Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil.
