Kancheepuram, Dec 24 (UNI) Forest officials arrested a nine-member gang for hunting a spotted deer in the Sembakkam forest area this morning.

Police said the officials, headed by Ranger Mohanraj rounded up the gang, when they were cooking the deer meat in the forest last evening and after interrogation, arrested them this morning.

The officials seized the cooked meat, raw meat and the skin.

The poachers, headed by Veeraraghavan (55), were produced before a court and remanded in custody.

Acting on a tip off that a gang was involved in hunting deers, the officials formed a special team, which ventured into the forest and caught them redhanded. It was not immediately known how they killed the deer.

More than 12,000 deers of different species were living in the Tiruporur and Sembakkam forest areas and the number was dwindling following poaching in recent past.
