Madurai, Dec 24 (UNI) Volunteers of the AIADMK and the DMDK today clashed over paying tribute to former Tamil Nadu chief minister and AIADMK founder MGR on his 20th death anniversary.
Trouble began when a group of AIADMK volunteers led by MGR Mandran local Leader Durai Pandiyan took out a silent rally from Periyar Statue near the City Corporation Office to the MGR Statue.
When the procession reached the statue this noon, AIADMK volunteers found DMDK flags near the statue and removed them inviting opposition from the rival party.
A heated argument ensued and ended in stone pelting resulting in injuries to six DMDK and four AIADMK men.They were treated at the Government Rajaji Hospital here.
Peace was restored after police intervened and warned the DMDK cadre of action as the time had been allocated to the AIADMK for garlanding the statue.
A large number of policemen were deployed in the area to prevent further trouble.
Meanwhile, political parties cutting across party lines paid floral tributes to the Dravidian leader by garlanding his statue at various places.
