Puducherry, Dec 23 (UNI) PMK Parliamentary party leader M Ramadass today urged the Territorial administration to take steps to obtain adequate funds from the Centre to provide relief to those affected by rain here.

In a statement, Prof Ramadass said the government should set up regional committees to assess the extent of damage and prepare a detailed report to be sent to the Centre for availing funds.

Crops in several hectares were destroyed and the government should provide a compensation of Rs 6,000 per hectare for paddy, Rs 1,000 per hectare for sugarcane and plantain, he said.

Prof Ramadass also urged the administration to take steps to waive the crop loans obtained by farmers from cooperative societies and nationalised banks.

Provision of 100 kg rice and Rs 3,000 to the fishermen, who could not venture out to sea and ten kg free rice to yellow ration card holders, who were affected by the rain were among the other demands made by the PMK leader.
