Kochi, Dec 23 (UNI) Inaugurating a 3.4 km long parallel taxi track along the runway at Nedumbaserry International Airport, near here, today, Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan hoped the track will help to relieve the air traffic congestion.
Stating that increased air traffic to the Nedumbaserry International Airport had resulted in considerable traffic congestion both in the air and on the ground, the Chief Minister said the airlines had to burn a lot of aviation fuel, waiting for their turn to land or take off.
Mr Achuthanandan noted that the track was completed in a record time of six months at a cost of Rs 12 crore.
Earlier, Cochin International Airport Ltd. (CIAL) Managing Director Sreeram Bharat said the length of the taxi track was 3400 meters (3.4 km), while the width of the carriageway was 23 meters, with 10.5 meter wide-shoulders on either side.
Mr Sreeram said the track was classified into 'Code E' category as per ICAO standards.
He said the track has connectivity on both ends of the runway and also to an intermediate one. This would help in reducing the runway occupancy time by aircraft, he added.
State Revenue Minister K P Rajendran, Fisheries Minister S Sarma, MPs Chandran Pillai, Lonappan Nambadan and K Sebastian Paul, local MLAs and panchayat officials, besides Members of the CIAL Board of Directors, were present on the occasion.
