Mumbai, Dec 23 (UNI) Moreshwar Mhadik, a 20-year-old youth, hailing from Sangamweshwar taluka in Ratnagiri district, was killed and eight others injured when five bogies of a Titawala-bound suburban train derailed between Kurla and Vidyavihar stations on the Central Railway here today.
The mishap occurred at around 1120 hrs, Central Railway sources said.
Railway Police Commissioner A K Sharma said the five of the injured were rushed by Railway Protection Force constables to the nearby Rajawadi Hospital at Ghatkopar.
Kuldeep Chaturvedi, Additional General Manager and J N Lal, Divisional Railway Manager rushed to the site along with other senior railway officers. A relief team was supervising the restoration work.
Services on the slow line were diverted to the fast track and full restoration was completed by 2000 hrs, the sources added.
Three of the injured were given on the spot treatment and allowed to go, while the other five were admitted to the Rajawadi Hospital, where the condition of two of them is said to be critical.
The Central Railway also announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 15,000 to the next of the kin of the dead person, Rs 5000 for those in critical condition, while Rs 500 was given to those who sustained minor injuries.
Sudhir Kumar, Commissioner of Railway Safety, Central Circle, Mumbai will hold a statutory inquiry into the derailment from 1000 hrs onwards on December 25 at Station Manager's office, Kurla.
