Coimbatore, Dec 22 (UNI) 'Security forces' were on standby at the airport here this morning, just minutes away from launching a 'rescue' operation as part of a mock drill, but it went awry as the authorities could only provide them with a bus and not an aircraft.
Planned by the Hijack Defence Committee at the airport, the exercise turned into a 'comic drill' by 1100 hrs with airliners, both private and state-owned, turning down its request for an aircraft to conduct the 'Hijack Rescue' operation.
The Committee then had to settle for a bus to stage the drill, police sources said.
Meanwhile, Committee Chairman and City Commissioner of Police (CoP) C K Gandhirajan had a tough time at the entrance of the airport when he was refused entry by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
The CoP's effort to convince them he was the CoP and was here to witness the drill turned futile.
Later, Mr Gandhirajan was allowed entry only after Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Shanmugha Priya intervened.
Police alleged though the CISF personnel were told about their mistake of barring the top official, they continued with the 'easygoing' attitude.
