Former Punjab minister Raghunath Sahay Puri no more

Chandigarh, Dec 22 (UNI) Former Punjab minister Raghunath Sahay Puri died today in PGI here at the age of 68 years.

He was keeping unwell for last six months due to kidney problem and was hospitalised sometime back. He breathed his last at about 1100 hrs this morning, family sources said.

He had undergone kidney transplant about five years ago.

He is survived by wife Kamini, son Naresh and three daughters Savita, Sangeeta and Surabhi.

Puri, who had represented Sujanpur assembly constituency in 1985, 1992 and 2002, was a prominent leader in the state.

From 1994 to 1997, under the Chief Ministership of Beant Singh, Harcharan Singh Brar and Mrs Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, he had held the portfolios of local bodies, tourism and employment.

In 2002, in the Chief Minister Amarinder Singh's cabinet, he was first held the portfolio of Urban Development and later became Transport minister.

He had earlier been a member of Sujanpur Municipal Council for about 21 years.

His body would be taken to his ancestral village in Sujanpur where he would be cremated tomorrow.

Punjab Congress President and leader of the Opposition Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, Former Punjab Minister Jagmohan Singh Kang, General Secretary PPCC Tarlochan Singh and General Secretary Raj Pal Singh today expressed great sorrow and grief over Puri's death.

Ms Bhattal said, ''He was a great leader and devoted Congressmen and served party and the people of the state with great dedication''.

All the leaders prayed the almighty to grant peace to his departed soul and courage to the bereaved family to bear this grim tragedy.
