Kochi, Dec 22 (UNI) Five labourers, including two women and two workers from Orissa, were killed while one was seriously injured following a landslide in a granite quarry at Kuzhoor at Muvatupuzha near here today.
Police identified three of the dead as Saramma and Jose from Kerala and Bahruddin Basra from Orissa. One more female from Kerala and a male labourer from Orissa were yet to be identified, Ernakulam Rural SP M Padmanabhan told UNI.
One more woman labourer was admitted in a serious condition to the Kozhencherry Medical Mission Hospital.
The State Government haD announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 50,000 for the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 25,000 for the injured.
State Ministers S Sarma and Vijaykumar, who visited the accident site, said the District Collector A P M Mohammad Hanish had been asked to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the incident.
The accident occurred around 1620 hrs as a huge boulder, made loose by the quarrying, broke from the mountainside and hurtled down alongwith mud and other rocks.
While the majority of the labourers managed to flee to safety, a few got trapped in the falling debris.
The granite quarry was a licensed one and, as of now, no offence was being charged against the owner, police added.
