By Staff

Chandigarh, Dec 22 (UNI) Scoring one goal in each half, strong contenders Chandigarh Dynamos defeated Orissa Steelers by 2-0 in their second successive victory from as many matches in the fourth edition of the Premier Hockey League (PHL) being conducted at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium here today.

Watched by a holiday crowd, Olympian Prabhjot Singh, who recently played in the Germany League along with Hyderabad Sultan captain Sardar Singh, pumped in two brilliant field goals and give full three points the Chandigarh team.

The Chandigarh Dynamos have a strong forwardline comprising of Deepak Thakur, Inderjit Chadha, Ravi Pal Singh and captain Rajpal Singh. Midfielder Ghazanfar Ali, a playing member of the Pakistan team, also bloster it in the mid field.

Drag flicker Sandeep Singh and fullback Zeeshan Ashraf and Sukhbir Singh Gill were, manning the defence.

Orissa Steelers are being led by seasoned campaigner former India captain Dilip Tirkey, who is the only Indian to be named in the FIH All-Star team.

The other prominent players in their line-up are William Xalco, Prabodh Tirkey, Roshan Minz, Sunil Ekka, Ignace Tirkey and Pakistan player Shakeel Abassi.

With star-studded teams in the middle, thrilling hockey was witnessed.

Chandigarh Dynamos forged ahead in the third minute.

Speedy Inderjit Singh Chadha initiated a move in the midfield and combined with Olympian Deepak Thakur, who relayed it to captain Rajpal Singh on the left.

Rajpal unleashed a shot into the circle and Prabhjot stretched his stick to deflect the ball into the net for a brilliant goal.

Orissa Steelers reorganised their game and initiated goal-bearing moves. However, despite their best efforts the equaliser eluded them.

In the second quarter, Prabodh Tirkey sent a defence-splitting ball into the goalmouth and as it raced through the goalkeeper legs, Roshan Minz connected it.

However, umpire Raghu Prasad disallowed it terming it as dangerous play. The Orissa Steelers protested for a while before resuming the match.

Just before the end of the third quarter, Orissa suffered another blow as Chandigarh Dynamos knocked in a freak goal to increase the lead. After Rajpal and Deepak Thakur exchanged passes, Jaswinder sent a weak shot into the circle and with Orissa custodian Gurpreet Singh about to clear it, Prabhjot managed to score.

Orissa Steelers worked hard and had more ball possession but all their efforts proved abortive.

Orissa Steelers now have one point for stretching their match against Bangalore Hi-Fliers to extra-time while Chandigarh Dynamos lead the table with six points. In PHL, if a match goes to extra time the winners will get two points and the losers, one point.

Prabhjot Singh was adjudged man of the match.
