Varanasi, Dec 22 (UNI) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today formally launched the 'Ram aur Ganga Bachao Andolan' against the proposed 1,000 km Greater Noida-Ballia Ganga Expressway and Dalit leader Periyar's controversial 'Sachchi Ramayan'.
The party would continue its agitation till the government announces the scrapping of the project, BJP legislative party leader Om Prakash Singh told a news conference here.
He sought the help of saints, seers and organisations striving for the cleanliness of the holy river, The former BJP state unit president informed that the party does not want to drive political mileage out of the issue, rather it had decided to form village-level committees to raise awareness among the people against the Ganga Expressway project.
With the construction of the Expressway, several planned and unplanned cities would come up on the banks of Ganga, further aggravating the pollution in the sacred river he claimed.
The former irrigation minister alleged while framing the project neither the suggestion of river experts and environmentalists was sought. The project was prepared in haste and would benefit only industrialists, higher officials and builders he alleged.
Mr Singh claimed about 2 lakh hectare agriculture land would be acquired for the project, resulting in the loss of 15 lakh quintal grains every year. ''The government is also giving false assurances to peasants.'' ''We would never allow Ganga to be polluted further as it was related with the faith of crores of people in the country. BJP is taking this project as a national issue and hope that one day, people from all walks of life oppose it, '' he asserted.
