Mumbai, Dec 21 (UNI) Teji Bachchan, mother of Bollywood mega superstar Amitabh Bachchan, died today in a suburban hospital after a prolonged illness. She was 93.
Teji was admitted to Leelavati Hospital in Bandra here 18 months ago. Her condition had deteriorated a few weeks back and she was shifted to the ICU.
The end came at 1315 hrs in the hospital. Family members were by her side when she breathed her last.
Born in 1914, she worked as a college lecturer before she married renowned Hindi poet Harivanshrai Bachchan after the death of his first wife in 1941.
Teji was associated with the freedom movement and she and her family members were close to the Nehru-Gandhi family.
She had also performed the 'Kanyadan' of Sonia Maino during her marriage to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Sonia had earlier stayed with Teji after her arrival from Italy for her marriage.
Teji had been keeping unwell after the death of her husband in 2003.
She is survived by her two sons Amitabh and Ajitabh and their families.
The mortal remains of Teji were brought to her family bungalow 'Prateeksha' in Juhu at 1630 hrs. Pandits from Varanasi will be reaching here tonight to perform a funeral service tomorrow morning, industry sources said.
Meanwhile, leading Bollywood personalities called on Amitabh at 'Prateeksha' to offer their condolences to the family members.
Industrialist Anil Ambani, Samajwadi party leader Amar Singh, Sahara chief Subroto Roy along with Amitabh's daughter Sweta Nanda and younger brother Ajitabh had assembled at the bungalow.
In Dehradun, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri extended his condolences to the bereaved family members.
