Six Naxalites surrender in Gadchiroli

Nagpur, Dec 21 (UNI) As many as six Naxalites, including a woman area committee secretary and a platoon commander, surrendered before the government in Gadchiroli district in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, police said today.

The Naxalites, identified as Bharati Akka (35), Secretary of the Kasansur Area Committee, Raju (21), platoon commander of the Janshakti Dalam, Sadhu (19), Dinga (25), Jagdish (21) and Madhu (21) (all members of various dalams), laid down their arms before District Collector Niranjan Kumar Sudhansu and Additional Superintendent of Police Anant Rokde yesterday.

Bharati Akka had been active in the naxalite movement for the last 15 years, having worked in Aheri Dalam and then in Jimalgatta Range Committee women's wing before being made Kasansur Area Committee Secretary, a police press release said.

The surrendered outlaws told the police that life in the naxalite movement was tough, including overload of work, being constantly on the move, lack of regular meals and medical care, the release said.

The six naxalites would be rehabilitated according to the state government's surrender scheme, it added.
