Id-ul-Zuha celebrated with religious fervour in Northwest region

Chandigarh, Dec 21 (UNI) Religious fervour and gaiety marked the Eid-ul-Zuha celebrations in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh Union Territory today.

Muslims, dressed in their colourful attire, thronged mosques and idgahs to offer ''Namaz'' and greeted each other and exchanged sweets on the occasion of 'Bakrid'. They were greeted by members of other communities.

In Punjab, a large number of Muslims congregated at a mosque at Malerkotla in Sangrur district and offered prayers. Reports of Id celebrations also poured in from Amritsar, Ludhiana and Jalandhar.

Similar celebrations were held in Haryana where the Muslims offered prayers in mosques at different places.

Haryana Governor A R Kidwai offered prayers at Jama Masjid here and conveyed his good wishes to the people, asking them to work for the welfare of society and the country.

There was a festive atmosphere in the Raj Bhawan where people from all walks of life offered greetings to the Governor and his family members.

Traditional fervour and enthusiasm marked the occasion in Himachal Pradesh. In Shimla, a large number of Kashmiri labourers offered ''Namaz'' at Jama Masjid.

In Chandigarh, hundreds of Muslims offered special Id-ul-Zuha prayers at the Jama Masjid in Sector 20. Similar prayers were offered at Burail village and Mani Majra in the union territory.
