Gadag, Karnataka, Dec 20 (UNI) Villagers allegedly attempted to manhandle the members of State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), who visited the flood affected Kurlageri and Menasagi villages of Gadag district, today.

They attempted to manhandle district Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mohsin and beat up the Village Accountant, who accompanied the SHRC members.

However, the police and local leaders intervened and brought the situation under control.

The members Justice B Parthasarathi and Justice R H Reddy went round the villages and talked to the villagers on the relief measures provided and inspected the makeshift sheds set up at these villages.

In Kurlageri village about 20 families, who had lost their houses in the flash floods during September last, were kept in a makeshift shed, while around another 200 people were provided with make shift sheet sheds at Menasagi village.

Most of the flood victims complained to the SHRC members about inadequate compensation paid to them ranging from Rs 1,500 to Rs 5,000.

At one stage, in Menasagi two former Congress Legislators and the Bharatiya Janata Party partymen engaged in a verbal exchange.

Later, talking to newspersons SHRC members said they would submit their report in a couple of days after receiving a report from the Deputy Commissioner.
