Chandigarh, Dec 20 (UNI) The Punjab and Haryana High Court today stayed further proceedings against former Punjab police chief Sarbdeep Singh Virk in two cases of amassing assets disproportionate to known sources of income and land grab.
While giving the order after the preliminary hearing on the petition filed by Virk with this prayer, Justice H S Bhalla also issued notices to the Punjab government, state police chief and others for January 10, 2008 RPT January 10,2008 to respond to the points raised in the petition.
The first FIR was registered against Virk on March 13 last by the state Vigilance Bureau on the charges, among other under the prevention of corruption act pertaining to amassing wealth and properties, whereas the other was registered on September 8 for alleged attempt to grab some land of an army widow in Kharar.
Virk, a senior IPS officer of Maharashtra cadre who was arrested on September 9 this year from Maharashtra Sadan, New Delhi, was admitted immediately in a hospital on arrival here due to serious medical problems.
He has already been granted bail by the High Court.
