Bangalore, Dec 20: Former Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy successfully underwent an open heart surgery to replace the blocked 'calcific aortic valve' at a super specialists hospital here today.

The four-and-a-half hour surgery was done by a five-member team of noted cardiac surgeons, led by Dr Vivek Jawali, at the Wockhardt Hospital on Bannerghatta road this afternoon. The 49-year-old Kumaraswamy was taken to the operation theater this morning after elaborate tests conducted during the last two days. Former Prime Minister H D Devegowda, who arrived at the hospital early in the morning, was by the side of his youngest son and stayed all along till the operation was completed.

"The surgery went very well and Mr Kumaraswmy would soon be shifted to ICU. It started 0830 hrs and ended half past noon. There is no need for concern," Wockhardt Hospital CEO Vishal Bali told the sources.

"Dr C N Manjunath, a cardiac surgeon in government-owned Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology and the brother-in-law of Mr Kumarswamy, was among the team of doctors who performed the operation," Dr Bali said.

The JD(S) leader was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday after he complained of chest pain. It was diagnosed that he was suffering from Calcific aortic valve stenosis, a valvular heart disease.

This occurs mainly in aged people but younger person can get afflicted if protein collagen gets destroyed and calcium is deposited in the valve leaflets, according to experts.

The aortic valve pumps out the good blood to the entire body from the heart.
