Islamabad, Dec 19 (UNI) At least 40 people were killed and several others injured when 15 bogies of Lahore bound Karachi-Express train derailed near Nowsheroferoz early this morning.
Railway officials feared the death toll may rise as a large number of people are still trapped under 15 out of 17 passenger wagons.
Rescue teams, locals and police officials reached the site of the accident, near Noshehro Feroz in Sindh province, after receiving the news.
Hundreds of people on board were returning to their homes to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha.
The injured are being shifted to hospitals in Nowshehroferoz, Sukkur, Khairpur and Nawabshah.
Meanwhile, Up and Down trains have been halted at Rohri and Nawabshah Railway Stations in Sindh.
The railway ministry said it appeared to be an accident but an inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the mishap.
This has been a major train accident since 2005, when three trains rammed into each other in Sindh killing 150 people.
