Chennai, Dec 19 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) President M Krishnasamy today urged the State Government to take up relief works on a war footing as incessant rains have hit 13 districts in the State in the last two days.
In a statement here, the Congress leader said the rains have claimed many lives, besides causing extensive damage to crops in the delta districts.
He said poor people, daily wage workers, farmers and fishermen were badly hit by the rains and wanted the Government to set up relief centres in all the affected districts.
The Government machinery should be kept ready and food and shelter should be provided to the needy. As water-borne diseases would spread fast during the rainy season, the health department should act fast and make available medicines to the affected people, he said.
Mr Krishnasamy said the DMK Government should ensure that there was no delay in providing compensation to the affected people.
The Government should press into service all department officials and form all-party committees in the affected districts to ensure that the relief works were carried out in a proper manner, he said.
