Chennai, Dec 19 (UNI) Atleast 11 people were killed and eight others injured in rain-related incidents in Tamil Nadu since last night as heavy rains battered the state for the second consecutive day today.
Police said four people of a family died on the spot when a portion of their house caved in following heavy rains in Tiruchirapalli. The victims, K Janakiraman (43), his wife Jothibai (36) and sons Mahesh (17) and Manikandan (10), were killed when a huge wall constructed by their neighbour collapsed on their house.
Tamil Nadu Transport Minister K N Nehru distributed Rs one lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.
In another incident, three people of a family were electrocuted when they accidentally touched a snapped live wire at Sivakollai village near Thiruvonam in Thanjavur district. The deceased were identified as Ganesan alias Soman (60), his wife Seerangam (50) and their daughter Radhika (15).
While two students were drowned when they slipped and fell into an overflowing well at Vellore, one death each were reported from Villupuram district and Chennai.
A report from Villupuram said one person was electrocuted when he came into contact with a live wire. One Cheenu (20), was killed when a portion of the wall of his dilapidated house collapsed on him at Avadi on the outskirts of the city.
A report from Thanjavur said eight people were injured in wall collapse incidents in the district.
A Pudukkottai report said two mechanised fishing boats capsized in mid-sea due to rough weather conditions. However, the fishermen from Kottaipattinam in the boat were rescued by their colleagues in other boats.
