Heavy rain disrupts normal life in Union Territory

Puducherry, Dec 19(UNI) Heavy rain continued to lash Puducherry and its suburbs disrupting normal life in Union Territory.

Puducherry received 133.8mm rainfall for the 24 hours ending at 0830 hours today.

Meanwhile, several low-lying areas, such as, Jawharnagar, Tendral Nagar, Aziz Nagar and several other places in Ouppalam constituency were inundated and drainage water entered into the ground floor residences at Natesan Nagar and Bhoomiyanpet, following a block in the drainage system, as the PWD authorities failed to desilt it.

District Collector Theeva Neethi Das visited the places along with other officials and directed the PWD authoritis and Ozhukarai municipality to do the needful on a warfooting. As many as 5000 food packets were distributed in the areas by the Ozhukarai taluk. Food packets were also distributed at Ariyankuppam and Villianur areas.

Meanwhile, CPI Councillor, Sekhar had a miraculous escape when he fell into an open drainage while trying to remove some block in the drainage. The people accompanying him lifted him from the drainage and saved him.

Mr Sekhar was admitted to the Government General Hospital here.
