Kolkata, Dec 19 (UNI) Gagan Verma shot a two-under par 70 to assume the opening day's lead in the Goodricke Eastern India Open, an event on the LG Indian Amateur Golf Tour, that teed off at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club here today.
Sanjeev Mehra was lying second at one-under par 71. HS Kang was sole third with level par 72. The trio of Simarjeet Singh, Tarun Gogale and Abhishek Jha were tied for the fourth spot at two-over 74.
Gagan, who finished as the runner-up in the LG RCGC Cup last week, made two birdies in the first four holes on the second and fourth before making a bogey on the sixth. A steady game saw him through the first nine without any further damage. On the back nine, with a birdie on the 14th he went two-under. However a bogey on the next valley undid the good work. Parring the next two holes, Gagan signed off with a birdie to finish two-under.
The six-day tournament will be first played under the stroke-play format for the first two days. The top 64 will then battle it out for honours in the matchplay format.
Top scores after 18 holes: 70 Gagan Verma, 71 Sanjeev Mehra, 72 HS Kang, 74 Simarjeet Singh, Tarun Gogale, Abhishek Jha.
