Chandigarh, Dec 19 (UNI) Congress MLA from Bholath Sukhpal Singh Khaira today demanded live coverage of the proceedings of the Vidhan Sabha during sessions.
In a letter to assembly Speaker Nirmal Singh Kahlon, Mr Khaira has requested that Doordarshan be granted permission to telecast the session proceedings live.
'' As you are aware the proceedings of Lok Sabha are shown live on our national television, and also during the sessions of the Parliament, there are various panel discussions involving Lok Sabha members and other experts on important national issues'', he pointed out in the letter.
The electors are well within their right to see for themselves the performance of their elected representatives during assembly sessions, Mr Khaira stated. Live coverage would also go a long way to discipline members of the House once they know that people of Punjab are watching their activities live, he added.
In the letter, the MLA noted that a lot of precious time of the legislature was wasted on non-issues in the session. At times many members use unparliamentary language and waste not only time but also the expenses incurred to organise these Vidhan Sabha sessions at the cost of public exchequer, the letter said.
It would also be meaningful to have panel discussions involving experts and elected members on important issues related to Punjab, which would create awareness in the minds of people at large, Mr Khaira said. In order to have healthy democracy and to inculcate good moral values in the system it is of prime importance to introduce live television coverage, he suggested.
