Cold wave claims 6 lives; UP toll at 43

Lucknow, Dec 19 (UNI) The cold wave continued unabated in Uttar Pradesh, with temperatures plunging below normal at several places even as six persons died in the last 24 hrs taking the toll to 43 so far.

The latest deaths were reported in Banda, Shahjahanpur and Bhadohi districts.

According to the weather office, Agra was the coldest place in UP recording the minimum temperature of three degrees Celsius, which was five degrees below normal.

Following dense fog during early mornings and late nights, several long distance trains were running late, while road traffic was also affected.

The night temperature fell considerably in Agra, Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Faizabad, Bareilly, Gorakhpur and Jhansi divisions.

Lucknow recorded the minumum temperature of 3.6 degrees, followed by Kanpur 4, Sultanpur 4.3, Varanasi 5.1, Allahabad 7.4 and Gorakhpur 7.7.

In the next 24 hours, the weather is likely to remain dry and the mercury will fall, said the Met office.

The cold wave has thrown the normal life out of gear and people prefer to remain indoors in early and late hours. Although sun was visible during most part of the day, the chilly winds continued to play the spoilsport.

Meanwhile, the State Government has made provision of bonfire at prominent public places.
