Midnapur, Dec 19 (UNI) Rejecting the bail petition of Tapan Ghosh and Sukur Ali, the two prime accused in Chhoto Angaria case, a local court today ordered 14 days more jail custody for both CPI(M) leaders.
Appealing for the bail, lawyers Ahin Addya and Biswanath Ghosh argued that they were not ''absconders'' as stated by police.
Tapan Ghosh was a school teacher and attended school regularly in Garbeta, while Sukur Ali was an important party member and addressed party meetings regularly. Hence, they could not be declared absconders and so should be given bail.
CBI lawyer Tapas Basu, however, argued that their property had been attached by the court taking them to be absconders and hence, they should not be given bail.
Rejecting the bail petition, second Additional District Judge Abdul Kuddus ordered that they should be produced in the court again on January 2, 2008.
He also ordered that the evidence of eight witnesses would be taken between January 20 and February 2 next.
Tapan and Sukur were arrested by Egra police on November 10 last while ferrying three injured from Nandigram to Egra.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee is due to address a public meeting here tomorrow protesting the recent incidents in Nandigram and Singur.
