Pravin Mahajan gets life sentence

Pravin
Mahajan,
convicted
of
the
murder
of
his
elder
brother
and
BJP
leader
Pramod
Mahajan,
was
today
sentenced
to
life
imprisonment.
Additional Sessions Judge S P Davare, who had convicted Pravin yesterday, pronounced the quantum of sentence today. While awarding the life sentence, the judge also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on him. Pravin Mahajan, who was also held guilty on house trespass charges, was awarded three years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000 on this charge.
Earlier, special public prosecutor Ujwal Nikam pressed for death penalty for the convict, contending that this was the ''rarest of the rare'' cases. Defence counsel Harshad Ponda, however, argued that this was not a ''rarest of the rare'' case.
Pravin
Mahajan
had
been
welcomed
to
the
home
of
Pramod
Mahajan
on
April
22
last
year
and
was
even
offered
tea.
Something
happened
during
the
intervening
period
which
led
to
the
bullets
being
fired
at
Pramod
Mahajan.
It
was
purely
a
family
problem
that
led
to
the
incident,
Mr
Ponda
told
the
court
while
pleading
for
a
lesser
punishment
for
his
client.
