Mumbai, Dec 18: Pravin Mahajan, convicted of the murder of his elder brother and BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, was today sentenced to life imprisonment.
Additional Sessions Judge S P Davare, who had convicted Pravin yesterday, pronounced the quantum of sentence today. While awarding the life sentence, the judge also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on him. Pravin Mahajan, who was also held guilty on house trespass charges, was awarded three years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000 on this charge.
Earlier, special public prosecutor Ujwal Nikam pressed for death penalty for the convict, contending that this was the ''rarest of the rare'' cases. Defence counsel Harshad Ponda, however, argued that this was not a ''rarest of the rare'' case.
Pravin Mahajan had been welcomed to the home of Pramod Mahajan on April 22 last year and was even offered tea. Something happened during the intervening period which led to the bullets being fired at Pramod Mahajan. It was purely a family problem that led to the incident, Mr Ponda told the court while pleading for a lesser punishment for his client.
