Chennai, Dec 14 (UNI) Heavy to very heavy rains have been predicted over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the next 48 hours due to a trough of low pressure over Bay of Bengal.

Met officials today said the low pressure over Bay of Bengal may develop into a depression, resulting in heavy to very heavy rains at many places over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the next 48 hours.

Fishermen were warned not to venture into sea.

''Strong onshore winds from north-easterly direction with speed occasionally reaching 45-55 kmph were likely off Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts,'' the officials said.

Meanwhile, the delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvaur and Nagapattinam, besides Cuddalore were badly hit due to heavy rains, which continued unabated for the two days.

Local authorities had declared a holiday for all educational institutions today in view of the heavy downpour.
