New Delhi, Dec 18 (UNI) Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has rued the declining standard in road maintenance in the areas in the city under the jurisdiction of the MCD.
In a letter to the city Mayor Arti Mehra, written a few days ago, Ms Dikshit said,''in the city, construction material, garbage heaps, debris and mud can be noticed on roads as well as road berms. The quality of ridership is also adversely affected by potholes.'' Urging the Mayor to issue necessary directions to the engineers and officers, who are responsible for road maintenance of MCD roads, to carry out necessary repairs of potholes and maintain roads in a clean condition, the Chief Minister said,''Delhi is now a global city. We cannot afford to relax road maintenance standards.'' Agreeing with the concern by the Chief Minister, Leader of the Opposition in the MCD Jaikishan Sharma said,''the bad condition of roads clearly reflect inefficient administration of the BJP during the last eight months.'' While denying that she had recieved the letter, the Mayor said she too had written a letter to the Chief Minister expressing her resentment over what she descibed as the Delhi Government's constant interference in the working of the MCD.
In this context, she said the committee set up by the MCD to further development of rural areas had been wound up.
On the CM's concern over conditions of roads in MCD areas, the Mayor said,''the Chief Minister should first pay attention to the PWD roads maintained by the Delhi government before worrying about the MCD roads.
