Tripura police officer sent to seven-day judicial custody

Agartala, Dec 17 (UNI) A local court in West Tripura today remanded Sub-Inspector Nandan Baidya to seven-day judicial custody for allegedly raping a minor girl in police lock-up last week.

A delegation of the Tripura Women's Commission (TWC) today met the victim's family as well as the police personnel and recorded the statements of both the parties while they sent the girl for fresh medical check-up.

TWC chairman Prof Tapti Chakraborty said the commission had taken serious note of the matter and TWC secretary Jaya Barman was entrusted with the responsibilty of investigating the matter.

Meanwhile, the incident triggered resentment among the women organisations and political parties while the Opposition Congress demanded high level inquiry into the case.

Police said sub-inspector Nandan Baidya had allegedly raped the victim in police lock-up and prima facie, the allegation was established.

The victim was reported 'abducted' by her boyfriend and both of them were brought to Bishramganj police station in West Tripura district on December 14 in connection with the case.
