Bhubaneswar, Dec 17 (UNI) The Orissa government today decided to initiate penal action against a US website for hurting the sentiments of crores of Hindus by portraying Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra in an insulting manner.
State Law Minister Biswabhushan Harichandan said he would soon write to the US Embassy to initiate penal action against the website for hurting the sentiments of crores of Hindus and their religious feelings.
The Union Government, the Minister said, would also be approached to ban the product throughout the country.
The website www.cafepress.com has a range of apparel products where the deities were shown covering the body of a dog and featuring on inner garments and thongs.
Mr Harichandan said the portrayal of the deities in such a manner was an insult to ''the culture and the religious feelings of crores of people'' and was highly condemnable.
He said the government was also examining what legal action could be taken against the website.
The Minister said massive public opinion should be created against the website and people should boycott the product throughout the country.
Mr Harichandan thanked the man from Puri, who on Sunday last filed a case in Puri Town Police station against the website.
