Ballia, Dec 17 (UNI) Samajwadi Party supremo and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav today termed former Prime Minister Chandrashekhar as the foremost socialist leader.
Addressing several election meetings here, Mr Yadav noted that the bypoll to the Ballia parliamentary constituency would prove to be a milestone in many ways.
The bypoll scheduled on December 29 was necessitated following the death of the former PM.
''Mr Chandrashekhar gave new heights to the slogans of socialism.
No one could ever defy his logic and reasoning in Parliament,'' Mr Yadav observed.
Training his guns on the state government, he said the Value Added Tax (VAT) regime in UP from January would spell disaster for lakhs of middle class traders.
''The country's economic policies are being drafted at the instance of USA and VAT is the outcome of the same phenomenon,'' he charged.
The SP chief maintained that his would continue to oppose VAT in the ''interests'' of traders in UP.
The former CM also lambasted current incumbent Mayawati on the issue of backlog recruitment, saying she was promoting injustice in society with her policies.
He further announced that the services of 16,000 police personnel, whose services were annulled by the state government, would be restored, when his party comes to power.
Mr Yadav said SP would also fight for the right of 16 castes, kept outside the purview of scheculed castes. ''SP has always honoured the rights of dalits and backwards.'' ''The law and order situation in UP is lying in tatters, and the condition of farmers and youth has deteriorated...Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) president Mahendra Singh Tikait was jailed to harass farmers,'' the former union minister added.
