Dharamshala, Dec 17 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today lashed out at the BJP for raking issues like regionalism, caste and religion to divide the people, saying the party had no policy and programme for common man.
Addressing a public meeting on the last day of the electioneering in the state, he asked the people ''not to forget those people who had opposed the granting of statehood to Himachal''.
Dr Singh said since the BJP had no policies and programmes for the common man, it was raking up issues like regionalism, caste and religion to exploit the peoples' sentiments.
Referring to the Prem Kumar Dhumal Government's tenure in the state, he said the BJP regime had failed to live up to the expectations of the common man.
By the time it handed over power to the Congress, the state's financial position had become very precarious, he said, adding that the situation finally recovered under the Virbhadra Singh Government.
Lauding the present Congress Government for its overall development during the last four and half years, he said it had done commendable work in education, health care, roads, railways, agriculture and horticulture.
The Prime Minister said the presence of large number of educational institutions in the state would help in making the state an educational hub of the country.
A medical college in the private sector, a central university and an IIT was on the anvil, he added.
He said the Centre had set up a separate department for the ex-servicemen and the retired army personnel so that their families could benefit by it.
