Chandigarh, Dec 16 (UNI) Commemorating the spectacular victory achieved by the Indian armed forces over Pakistan forces on both the eastern and the western fronts in 1971, Vijay Diwas was celebrated at the Western Command headquarters here today.
In a solemn wreath laying ceremony held at Veer Smriti, the Command War Memorial, Lt Gen T K Sapru, GOC-in-C, Western Command, veterans of the Indo-Pak wars and other officers, JCOs and ORs paid homage to the martyrs who had sacrificed their lives for the country.
Prominent among the retired officers present on the occasion were Lt Gen R S Dayal, Maj Gen D P Singh, Brig Kuldip Singh Chandpuri, Brig K S Sandhu, Lt Col R S Sharma and Lt Col M L Sharma.
Later in the evening, a candle lighting ceremony was also organised at the Memorial. Nearly 500 members of the families of Chandimandir Military Station participated in the event, in remembrance of the martyrs.
It was on this day 36 years ago that over 90,000 Pakistan troops surrendered to Indian forces, which resulted in the birth of Bangladesh. This day also commemorates the victory of 'Operation Vijay' in 1999, wherein in the gallant Indian soldiers evicted the Pakistani intruders from the extremely rugged heights of Muskoh, Dras and Batalik in Jammu&Kashmir, as also the gallant sacrifices of the Indian Armed Forces during earlier conflicts with Pakistan in 1948 and 1965.
