Kochi, Dec 16 (UNI) Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi today reiterated the need for compromise and cooperation rather than confrontation at Sivagiri Mutt at Varkala in Thiruvananthapuram district.

Addressing a gathering after inaugurating the M K Raghavan Vakkil memorial conference here, he said, ''as rightly pointed out by the Supreme Court, Sivagiri Mutt is not a place for confrontation, but peace and camaraderie.'' Referring to the recent trouble over the management of the Mutt, he said the priests concerned should work together and uphold the principles of Sree Narayana Guru's teachings.

Mr Ravi recalled the efforts of Vakkil in social engineering and protecting the rights of the backward sections of society.

''Vakkil in his capacity as the labour leader at the Cochin Port had relentlessly worked for the uplift of the dock workers and ensured that their rights were protected,'' he noted.

Later, the Minister presented the M K Raghavan Vakkil memorial award to Dr T Bhaskaran for his efforts to spread the message of Sree Narayana Guru. The award carried a cash prize of Rs 25,000 and a citation.
