Lucknow, Dec 15 (UNI) The opposition Samajwadi Party today charged the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh with misusing the administrative and police machinery to influence judiciary.
SP state unit president Shivpal Singh Yadav said to bring judiciary under its control, the regime was misusing the administrative and police machinery.
''The lathicharge on lawyers in Kanpur two days back was a part of the same design,'' he alleged.
Mr Yadav claimed that the judiciary was being influenced so that the criminal cases against chief minister Mayawati, her ministers and other high ranking officials could be turned into the government's favour.
''With the aid of police machinery, the state government is trying to send out a message to the judiciary to toe its line, else it would have to face atrocities by criminals and police,'' the SP leader maintained.
The former state minister further noted that it was a dangerous step for the democracy, which the party censures.
He demanded that the cases registered against lawyers in Kanpur be withdrawn and a judicial probe is conducted in the matter.
