Mumbai, Dec 15 (UNI) The Bombay Gymkhana kicked off the platinum jubilee celebrations of the historic first cricket Test match played in India by launching their cricket academy here today.
The first ever Test match on Indian soil was played here at the Bombay Gymkhana from December 15 to 18, 1933 between the Douglas Jardine led MCC team and Col C K Nayudu led Indian team.
The Bombay Gymkhana has also asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to allot them a match against England from December 15, 2008 as the English team will be touring India during that time and there would be no better way of commemorating the historic occasion than a match between the two, it was informed at a press conference here today.
As part of the celebrations, the English county Somerset which is on a tour of India, will play a 45 over match against Bombay Gymkhana XI at the historic venue tomorrow.
During the year long celebrations, the Bombay Gymkhana plans to host a Twenty20 inter-club tournament, followed by the RFS Taleyarkhan and Birla Sun Life under-13 tournaments as well as an Inter-School cricket quiz.
The Bombay Gymkhana Cricket academy will be headed by former Mumbai Ranji Trophy player Zubin Bharucha and he will be assisted by Monty Desai and former India cricketers Narendra Hirwani and Sameer Dighe.
