Mumbai, Dec 15 (UNI) 'Mumbai Unplugged' or the 'Batti Gul' campaign evoked a mixed response today as some parts of the city plunged into darkness even as others remained lit as usual.
In certain parts, residents in big numbers participated in the unique campaign by switching off electricity for an hour from 1930 hrs to 2030 hrs this evening.
The campaign was initiated to make people aware of the drastic consequences of the global warming and deteriorating environmental conditions.
Areas like Bandra in the western suburbs and Ghatkopar in the central suburbs were in darkness with residents voluntarily participating in the campaign.
The area of South Mumbai responded in a mixed manner to the campaign with many areas lit as usual. However, residents of posh Marine Drive area of South Mumbai participated in it.
Many of the five star hotels in the city like the Taj and Hilton Towers had lit their hotels with lamps and had switched off the lights.
Mumbai Mayor Shubha Raul on thursday had urged the citizens to participate in the campaign whole-heartedly and make it a grand success.
In major parts of the city, youngsters were seen participating in the campaign enthusiastically.
