B'lore International Marathon on Dec 16

Bangalore, Dec 15 (UNI) More than 24 runners from abroad and over 9,000 from various parts of India will take part in the Bangalore International Marathon here tomorrow.

Karnataka Athletics Association General Secretary Satyanarayana told UNI that except six athletes from Sri Lanka, who were expected to arrive this evening, all others from Kenya, Malaysia, UK, Ethiopia, Indonesia, USA, Uganda and Iran had already arrived.

Ethiopia had fielded the highest number of eight athletes, followed by Sri Lanka with six, Kenya five, including two women, and one each from other countries.

The competition for the 25,000 dollar event would be tough as Indian athletes of international fame Neelama, Satyabhama, Erappa, Radhakrishna, Shivananda, Bipul Sharin, Pija Sridharan, Preeti were expected to give tough fight in Full Marathon and Half Marathon.

''It may not be that easy for the foreign athletes, as Indian athletes, almost all of them being medal winners, were participating in one or the other events. You can expect a good race tomorrow with competition hotting up,'' he added.

He said there was overwhelming response from the corporate sector for the charity run of five km. More than 18 Corporates, with Herbal life fielding a contingent of 1,100, followed by BSNL with 800, the main sponsor of the event, TCI 300, Philips 140 etc.

Satyanaraya said that so far 9,800 entries had been registered and by the evening it may cross 10,000.

The full marathon of 41.095 km would start at 0600 hrs, half marathon at 0615 hrs and the charity run at 0900 hrs.
