Lucknow, Dec 15 (UNI) The BJP today demanded the setting up of cow protection and development ministries at the central and state levels.
Addressing newspersons here, BJP's Cow Development Cell national president Radhey Shyam Gupta said here that despite repeated assurances, state governments had failed to check cow slaughter.
''Though a law was enacted by the Uttar Pradesh Government to prevent cow slaughter, the practice continues across the state as police and administration have become a part of the roaring business,'' he said.
He claimed that the business of cow meat and calf skin had increased manifold since Independence. ''In 1947, the country had a mere 250 slaughter houses. Now the figure has reached over 40,000,'' he said adding, efforts should be made to use cow dung and urine.
''Tests have shown that cow dung and urine can generate enough energy to run computers, radio sets and even TV...the newly-formed cell will reach out to farmers to teach them about the benefits of protecting cows,'' he added.
