Mumbai, Dec 15 (UNI) Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) today introduced 'King Long' luxury air-conditioned buses from China, which were flagged off by Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.

Mr Deshmukh, BEST General Manager Uttam Khobragade and BEST Committee members later took a ride in the bus.

Fifteen of these high end air-conditioned buses had been introduced today and will ply between Sion and Andheri, Backbay Depot to Dahisar and Thane to Mantralaya.

The King Long buses costs Rs 50 lakh each and the Undertaking had placed an order for 20 buses. The remaining five buses are expected soon.

However, BEST Union is opposing the introduction of these buses because it was decided to run them on a dedicated route which is not yet cleared by MMRDA and other organisations. The Union is also opposing the Undertaking's decision to spend Rs 10 crore for luxury buses, when the finances of the company are not in a good condition.

According to the BEST management, the King Long buses had been introduced to encourage the use of public transport. The fares are around Rs 50 per trip.

The first bus from the respective depots will start at 0800 hrs and the last bus will be at 1000 hrs.
