Shimla, Dec 15 (UNI) Union Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma today opposed the CPM's demand for converting Himachal Pradesh University into a Central university.
Addressing a public meeting here, he said, ''let the state have a HP University here and a central university at Kangra and these two would help in providing quality education to the students.'' Mr Sharma, who was accompanying AICC president Sonia Gandhi, said the UPA Government had sanctioned a sum of Rs 1,43,000 crore for rural credit infrastructure after the previous NDA Government closed about 40,000 branches of the bank in the rural areas.
Besides, the government sanctioned a sum of Rs 1,74,000 crore under the Bharat Nirman programme for strengthening rural infrastructure, he said, adding the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) was also launched to provide 100 days of employment to the rural poor.
He criticised the BJP's decision to project Mr L K Advani as its Prime Ministerial candidate and Mr Prem Kumar Dhumal as Chief Ministerial nominee in Himachal Pradesh, saying the announcements would not make any difference in the long run.
Mr Advani, who had failed miserably during his tenure as the country's deputy prime minister, was not expected to do wonders, he added.
The minister said the BJP had ''no programmes or policies'' and was only ''misleading'' the people on various issues.
