UP govt to equip police with modernised weapons
Lucknow, Dec 14 (UNI) To uproot goons and mafias, the Mayawati government today decided to equip the Uttar Pradesh Police with modernised weapons and equipment.
The decision to provide the police with updated weapons was taken at a high-profile meeting today, Principal Secretary (home) J N Chamber told reporters here this evening.
Under the Rs 114 crore Police Modernisation scheme, the Centre has so far sanctioned Rs 41 crore. If the need arises, the state government would purchase weapons from its budget to control the law and order situation, Mr Chamber informed.
The modernisation would assist the police during surveillance and DNA tests, he maintained.
He said for police modernisation, the Centre shares 75 per cent of the fund, while 25 per cent share is of the state government.
