Chandigarh, Dec 14 (UNI) The Punjab government has launched a special campaign to check the sale of adulterated jaggery being brought to Punjab from other states, State Health and Family Welfare Minister Luxmi Kanta Chawla today said. While checking the adulteration of milk, Khoya, Ghee and sweets, it has come to the government's notice that adulterated jaggery was being brought from other states and flooded in the markets of Punjab, Ms Chawla said.
"Such jaggery contains lot of harmful chemicals that are used to make it whiter. Even the base material being used for manufacturing of jaggery is not fit for human consumption,'' she added.
The Health Minister cautioned the traders that while purchasing jaggery being brought from other states, they should ensure that the concerned consignment has been passed by the Government Food Laboratory of Punjab.
Meanwhile, Director Health Dr Sukhdev Singh today issued instructions to all Civil Surgeons to conduct raids to check the sale of adulterated jaggery.
