Twenty seven-year-old Indian merchant has been charged with illegally detaining his 24-year-old wife, assaulting her and threatening to kill her if she returned to their house.

However, the husband dismissed her claims before the Dubai Court of First Instance. In a statement to the public prosecution, the wife said, ''Ever since we have been married he has been quarrelling with me and constantly beating me up.'' ''One day, he stormed into the kitchen where I was standing. He pushed me and I cut my left arm with the knife which I was using.

Then he locked me in my bedroom and I kept on drinking water from the faucets in the washroom in order to survive,'' she added.
The wife testified that her husband threatened to kill her if she ever reported that matter to her parents or the police, the Gulf news reported here.

Reiterating pains of the victim, a 36-year-old Indian principal told the court, ''She constantly complained that her husband and parents-in-law had treated her badly since they married.'' ''She also complained that he was a demanding husband. But, I always encouraged her to preserve her marriage,'' she added.
