Mumbai, Dec 13: Sensex at Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) today opened 122.24 points up near 20,500 in the early trade following the previous day gain.
Both the niche indices struck lifetime highs. The benchmark Sensex hit an all time high 20,498.11, while the S&P CNX Nifty struck record high under 6,200 level. However, sensex slid in negative zone on profit booking during the mid-morning trade.
Asian markets were trading lower today. US markets ended the day with marginal gains yesterday, traders said.
FMCG, metal and Auto stocks rose. IT&banking stocks declined. Market breadth was strong on BSE. ITC and Mahindra&Mahindra were top gainers while Bharti Airtel&HDFC Bank were top losers from Sensex pack.
Market breadth was strong on BSE. On BSE, 2,068 stocks advanced, 663 stocks declined and 37 stocks remained unchanged.
Out of 30 stocks from the Sensex pack, 18 advanced.
BSE Mid Cap index rose 0.96 per cent to 9,429.40. It hit an all time high of 9,460.50 today. BSE Small Cap index rose 1.74 per cent to 12,092.22. It hit an all time high of 12,138.34 today. Both these indices outperformed Sensex.
Reliance Industries rose 0.73 per cent to Rs 2,905.40. IT stocks declined. Infosys was down 0.65 per cent to Rs 1,673.80, Satyam Computer Services was down 1.77 per cent to Rs 423.50 and Wipro down 1.95 per cent to Rs 495.80 edged lower. However Tata Consultancy Services rose 0.57 per cent to Rs 1,055.
Banking majors declined. ICICI Bank down 0.69 per cent to Rs 1,278.80 and HDFC Bank was down 1.91 per cent to Rs 1,747.10 edged lower. However, State Bank of India rose 0.39 per cent to Rs 2,450. Bharti Airtel came down 4.22 per cent to Rs 1,009, HDFC was down 1.58 per cent to Rs 3,055.
