Colombo, Dec 13 (UNI) Asgiriya stadium in the hill town of Kandy, where Muttiah Muralitharan shattered Australian Shane Warne's world record of 708 Test wickets, could be renamed after the controversial off-spinner.
Sri Lankan Sports Minister Gamini Lokuge today said he would ask the authorities of the stadium, which belongs to the Trinity College of Kandy, to rename the ground after local boy Muralitharan, according to reports in Sri Lankan media.
Muralitharan, who hails from Kandy, claimed his 700th wicket at the same venue against Bangladesh in July.
Trinity College authorities, however, said no official request had been received from the government.
Asgiriya became a Test venue in 1983 and is one of the most picturesque cricket grounds in the world.
