Sehwag recalled, Pankaj surprise inclusion for Australia tour

By Staff

Bangalore, Dec 12 (UNI) Swachbuckling Delhi batsman Virender Sehwag was today recalled while Rajasthan seamer Pankaj Singh was the surprise choice in the 16-member Indian squad announced for the four-Test series against Australia beginning on December 20.

Announcing the team, BCCI Secretary Niranjan Shah told newspersons here that opener Gautam Gambhir was not considered as he has injured his shoulder and will need three weeks' rest.

Shah added that Munaf Patel was also left out as the Gujarat pacer is yet to recover fully from his injury and had been asked to play in a few local first class matches.

The selection of the squad was on expected lines but for the inclusion of Pankaj Singh who will be on his first international tour.

The inclusion of Sehwag, who had done well in the previous tour Down Under -- hitting a blistering 195 in Melbourne in one day -- was on expected lines.

The injury to Gambhir seemed to have pave the way for the Delhi opener, who was not even in the list of probables, to make a comeback.

The two players who were left out of the squad that was named for the third Test against Pakistan here were Punjab speedster VRV Singh and Bengal pacer Ranadeb Bose.

The squad: Anil Kumble (capt), M S Dhoni (vice-capt), Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Sourav Ganguly, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, R P Singh, Ishant Sharma, Irfan Pathan, Wasim Jaffer, Virender Sehwag, Dinesh Karthik, Pankaj Singh.
