Kerala defeats Gujarat by nine wickets

Surat, Dec 12 (UNI) Kerala today defeated Gujarat by nine-wickets in the Ranji trophy 'Plate' group match at the Lalabhai Contractor Stadium here.

The visitors, who required 74 runs in the second innings, reached the target in the 12th over on the final day today.

Kerala began the day from then overnight score of 27 for no loss and wrapped up the match after losing opener M A Sebastin (15). The other opener R V Gomez scored an unbeaten 31 and V A Jagadeesh was not out on 21. Gujarat's Mohnish Parmar picked up the lone wicket in Kerala's second innings.

Kerala medium pacer Sony Cheruvathur was the star of the victory, having bagged 12 wickets in the match. His impressive seven-wicket haul and a century by P R Prem had helped Kerala score a crucial 186-run lead in the first innings.

Cheruvathur took five-wickets in the second innings and restricted Gujarat to 259 in the second innings.

With this victory, Kerala has earned five points, as Gujarat lost their first match in this Ranji season. Gujarat had won their earlier encounters against Tripura and Assam.
