Sreedharan to receive 'Pinnamaneni' award

Vijayawada, Dec 11 (UNI) The Managing Director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation E Sreedharan has been selected for the 'Pinnamaneni and Seethadevi Foundation' award.

The award, carrying a purse of Rs two lakh and a citation would be presented to him at a function to be held at Thummalapalli Kshetraiah kalakshetram here on December 16.

Announcing the award at a press conference here today, Foundation managing trustee C Nageswara Rao said Dr Sreedharan was selected for the award in recognition of his services for executing several railway projects during his distinguished career spanning 36 years of service in the Indian Railways.

Dr Rao said Dr Sreedharan's major achievement was restoration of the 124 spans of Pamban railway bridge, which were washed away following a tidal wave in December 1964, in a short period of 46 days.

A recipient of many prestigious awards, Dr Sreedharan was accorded 'Padmasri' in 2001, 'Man of the year' award by Times of India in 2002 and 'Shri Om Prakash Bhasin award' for professional excellence engineering in the same year.

Dr Rao said the award, instituted to honour eminent personalities in the field of literature, culture, fine arts, medicine, science, sports and social services, is being given every year in recognition of their services.

He said the foundation was also extending financial assistance to meritorious students, who were economically backward to pursue professional studies.
