Siliguri, Dec 10 (UNI) Orissa were within the striking distance of registering a straight win against Bengal after finishing day two at 88 for three and needing just 51 runs, having shot out the hosts for a paltry 124 in their second essay at the Kanchenjangha stadium here today.
Bengal gave a pathetic batting display twice in the space of two days as Orissa set up a victory target within three days play.
The highlight of day two was veteran Debashis Mohanty's inspired seam bowling that left Bengal floored. With the exception of Arindam Das (47) and Sourav Sarkar (31) none reached a respectable score as Bengal slumped to 124 all out.
Debashis Mohanty returned with four for 38, while the first innings wrecker-in-chief V Mohanty had two for 29 as Orissa cut through Bengal's soul.
If the green-top at Siliguri witnessed 20 wickets tumbling on day one, today 13 went as Bengal were literally wiped out of the match.
By the close of the day's play, Orissa had knocked off 88 of the 139 runs required to win with the loss of three wickets.
However, the way the wicket had behaved in Siliguri, 51 runs would be no easy task as the Bengal bowlers would be ready to use the early juice to their best help. Orissa's two experienced hands R R Parida and R R Das were at the crease at 27 and one respectively and would hopefully pull off the upset.
